PhD in Humanities, XLI

Dottorato di ricerca in Scienze Umanistiche, XLI ciclo

The PhD program in Humanities offers advanced courses which are structured into three curricula (Philology and Ancient Literatures, Modern and Contemporary Cultures and Literatures, Cultural Heritage). It reflects an integrated vision of the humanities as a body of interconnected knowledge, considered synchronically, diachronically and methodologically. The program is open to new digital contexts as well.

The high-level training in philology, literature, linguistics, history, art history, archaeology, and ethnology-anthropology is enriched by the mutual interactions between disciplines, ranging from antiquity to the contemporary era from a perspective of innovation and digital transformation.

The PhD in Humanities encourages engagement with the international academic context in a spirit of exchange and mutual collaboration. The program promotes co-tutored theses, offering the opportunity to spend at least a semester at foreign universities, a month at other Italian universities, and, based on the research projects carried out, a semester in public administration, institutions or research centers.

Research Areas

The interdisciplinarity of the program, its specific educational objectives and the expected learning outcomes - in terms of knowledge, skills, and competencies, both disciplinary and transversal - are consistent with the cultural and professional profiles of graduates, clearly defined for the three curricula, as well as with the available financial and structural resources.

Specifically, the three curricula are dedicated to:

  1. The systematic study of antiquity (Altertumswissenschaft), understood as a foundation of national and European culture, through the tools of classical philology and the evidence of Greek and Latin literature, also considering the reception of the ancient world;
  2. The study of European cultures and literatures of the modern and contemporary periods, with approaches aimed at investigating linguistic and communicative aspects, interactions between literary production and other aesthetic forms, intercultural and cross-media relations;
  3. The multidisciplinary study of cultural heritage, both tangible and intangible, from antiquity to the contemporary era, focusing on archaeological, ethnological-anthropological, and art-historical categories, also considering their digital applications.

Alignment with the PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan)

The PhD program is aligned with the main objectives of the PNRR:

  • Objective 1: Digitalization and competitiveness
  • Objective 4: Strengthening technology transfer and entrepreneurship

Educational Objectives

  • To investigate the humanities in the context of the interconnections between disciplines, in order to address contemporary challenges posed by the new European and global context;
  • To investigate, using research methodologies and innovative critical approaches - including attention to gender issues - the processes of transmission of cultural forms and literary texts from antiquity to the present, analyzing their genres, codes, and contexts, and exploring philological, linguistic, and hermeneutic aspects, including interactions between literary and extra-literary spaces (archaeological, art-historical, and ethnological-anthropological), with a focus on both synchronic and diachronic cultural dynamics;
  • To analyse, through interdisciplinary and digital approaches, the cultural heritage (archaeological, art-historical, and ethnological-anthropological) in their mutual implications and relationships with literary production, considering tradition, preservation, renewal and accessibility, with the purpose of enhancing, among other things, the identity of Southern Italian territories for a sustainable and circular tourism ecosystem;
  • To critically engage with methodologically updated perspectives and approaches in humanities research;
  • To apply specialized disciplinary and interdisciplinary knowledge to projects and initiatives for the promotion, communication, and dissemination of humanistic knowledge, including the enhancement of historically grounded traditions, the circulation and reception of literary texts and cultural heritage;
  • To promote the dissemination of data and the promotion of research results, ensuring public access in line with the principles of Open Science and FAIR Data;
  • To develop advanced training for specialists in cultures, literatures, and cultural heritage, with a focus on changes in cultural and cross-media forms and systems, allowing to undertake research tasks as well as cultural management at the highest level within the European context
  • To promote, based on existing and future collaboration agreements with European universities, bilateral and intercultural courses aimed at obtaining a double degree or a joint degree.

Professors from foreign Universities

The online educational activities will be held in the virtual classroom available on the University’s E-learning Portal.

In light of the international debate on the role of universities in society as regards knowledge and the relationship with local communities, and considering ANVUR’s (National Agency for the Evaluation of Universities and Research) guidelines on promoting interactions between universities and society - commonly referred to as Knowledge Transfer and Public Engagement - the PhD Program in Educational, Developmental, and Learning Sciences aims to enhance activities directed towards society and the local territory.

Considering that the dissemination of research results is a core objective of the activities related to Knowledge Transfer and Public Engagement, the PhD Program seeks to foster dialogue not only with the national and international academia, but also with society and local stakeholders, through the organization of seminars, conferences, and events involving both faculty and PhD students, held within the Department as well as at other institutions (public and private organizations, associations, schools, research centers, etc.).

To this end, PhD candidates are encouraged, as part of their training, to participate in (and/or organize) events in which they play an active role in the dissemination of research, including in non-academic contexts.

To ensure proper authorization and reimbursement of research stays connected with participation in scientific events in Italy and abroad, it is necessary to follow these steps:

  • An email should be sent, preferably at least seven days in advance, to the Coordinator to request authorization for the research stay, following prior agreement with the supervisor. The email should include, if available, the flyer or other documents related to the event.
  • The specific application form must be completed, signed by both the Coordinator and the Supervisor, and submitted by email to the Administration and Accounting Office (amministrazione.studiumanistici@unifg.it).
  • In accordance with the specific conditions and procedures established in the regulations on research stays, an advance payment may be requested. For this purpose, the appropriate form must be completed and attached to the application form referred to in the previous point.
  • At the end of the research stay, the report form with travel and accommodation expenses, duly signed, must be submitted to the Administration and Accounting Office together with all original receipts and the certificate of participation. In the absence of the latter, a self-declaration may be submitted instead.
  • For the reimbursement of travel, meal, and accommodation expenses, original receipts, invoices and boarding passes (including electronic ones) must be provided.
  • For research stays in Italy, reimbursement of meal, accommodation, and non-scheduled transport expenses requires proof of payment by a traceable method (credit card or bank transfer).
  • Authorization for the research stay is always required, regardless of any subsequent request for expense reimbursement. The PhD program includes a mandatory period of training abroad, for which the application must be submitted to the University PhD Office. Reimbursement of round-trip travel expenses for this training period may be requested, subject to the availability of PhD funds, following the same procedure described above for research stays.
